From Toronto to the world

One idea, six countries

  • YEP began in Toronto, Canada in September 2010. Since then, it has expanded across Canada and into Niger, Ethiopia, Spain, Poland, and Indonesia.
  • Each program is run by a local partner, and we work closely with every one of them, sharing our training and curriculum at no cost. Youth in our programs help translate the curriculum into each community’s language.

Today, through our national and international partners, the program reaches over 10,000 participants every year.

Spain

Launched as AFEX – Aprenem Families en Xarxa (“Families Learning Together”), in partnership with Casa Àsia. The pilot ran in a community with many newcomers from Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh, with student volunteers from local high schools.

The program teaches Spanish and Catalan language and culture and technology, and includes field trips to major cultural centres to help newcomers feel at home. The Government of Catalonia and the City of Barcelona have supported it and helped launch it in more areas.

  • 6 locations across Spain
  • Newcomer adults from 9+ countries
  • 2 awards in 2018

“It brought a change in my mother.”

When she heard about the program, Laiba Zaman was immediately hooked. She became one of the first volunteers in YEP’s program in Spain, and her mother joined as a participant. A year later, Laiba became a program facilitator.

“My mother went to other language schools for ten years, but I saw no difference in her. When we started this project, I noticed that she was getting better. That was the most important thing for me: it brought a change in my mother.”

“I remember when I was a student tutor, a woman came to class for the first time. It was her first time in any classroom. She never had any education because her mom died when she was young and she had to take care of her siblings. After the lesson, when she wrote her name on the whiteboard, she was in tears and said, ‘My dream is now fulfilled.’”

Laiba says the program has greatly improved her self-confidence. “When I started out, I did not think I would be able to do this.”

Libore

Niger

In partnership with Pencils for Kids, which provides education, training, and income-generating opportunities for children and women in Niger, youth teach computer and internet skills to adults in their community.

YEP provided laptops, and the program runs twice a week out of a facility built by Pencils for Kids. Student tutors wear uniforms to create a work-like environment. Many adults joined in, including local police officers, whom youth helped digitize their department’s records.

  • Twice-weekly sessions

“In one month, I learned more than in six months at a private institute, because I always had a tutor.”

Indonesia

We support groups in Indonesia in a few different ways.

Phones that lead to jobs. We provide phones to low-income families. Their children teach them to use the phone and local delivery apps, Indonesia’s versions of Uber Eats, so parents can find work as couriers.

Youth supporting seniors. Young people living in orphanages receive leadership training and education, then support seniors in need: keeping them company and teaching them the everyday digital skills they need today.
