Programs our partners run

North York, Ontario

A community health centre engaged local high school students, who came every week to teach seniors how to use technology.

“Now I can call my family back home on Skype. It was the first time seeing their faces after so many years!”

Rosalyn, adult learner

Libore, Niger

Pencils for Kids, an organization that supports development activities in Libore, Niger, engaged youth to teach computer and internet skills to adults. Learners have included local police officers, who used their new skills to digitize their department’s records.

“In one month, I learned more than in six months at a private institute, because I always had a tutor.”

“It’s like a chain: I train the youth, who in turn teach the adults. It feels great to be a part of it.”

“At the community’s health centre, high school students come in after school to teach seniors and other adults. I learned quickly what our community needed: adults who wanted to stay connected, and youth looking for a way to help. A lot of students are shy when they first come in. As we train them, they get comfortable, and now I see them walk up to seniors and start a conversation. More youth hear about it from their friends every year, and the program keeps growing.”
